Privacy

Scope.

This policy covers cleveredit.co and its subdomains, the biweekly email newsletter, and the Data Room download endpoints. It applies to anyone who visits the site, opens an email, or downloads a dataset.

The Clever Edit is operated as a sole proprietorship by the publication's founder and editor-in-chief. We are the data controller for the information described below.

What we collect.

Three categories, kept narrow on purpose.

• Email address — only if you subscribe to the newsletter. Used to deliver issues. Stored with our email service provider (see §5).
• Server logs — when you load a page, our host records the request IP, user-agent, referrer, and response status. Rotated and deleted on a 30-day cycle.
• Aggregate analytics — anonymous, cookie-less page-view and visitor counts, computed by our host from server logs. No individual identifiers. No cross-site tracking.

If you use the contact form or write to us at press@cleveredit.co, tips@cleveredit.co, or syndication@cleveredit.co, we collect the details you provide — your name, email, and message — and retain that correspondence as part of our editorial record. Contact-form submissions are processed and stored by our hosting & forms provider (see §5).

What we don't.

The Clever Edit does not run advertising. We do not sell, rent, syndicate, or share reader-level data of any kind. We do not embed third-party social pixels, retargeting tags, or A/B testing scripts.

We don't track which Data Room datasets you download or which datasets you cite in your own work. Downloads pass through ordinary web logs (see §2) and are not linked to subscriber records.

Cookies & analytics.

The site uses one functional cookie — to remember your tweak preferences across reloads of an article. It contains no identifier and is set only on the device on which you change a setting. No analytics cookies are set.

Our aggregate page-view counts are computed server-side from the same logs described in §2. No JavaScript is loaded from third-party analytics vendors.

Third parties.

We rely on the following categories of processor. Each is bound by a data-processing agreement and processes data only on our written instructions.

• Email delivery — a US-based newsletter platform holds the subscriber list, delivers issues, and processes confirmations and unsubscribes, under its own privacy policy.
• Hosting & forms — a US-based hosting provider, operating a global edge network, serves the pages and dataset files, receives the request logs described in §2, and processes contact-form submissions, under its own privacy policy.
• Fonts — typography is loaded from a third-party font provider, so opening a page issues a request to that provider's servers. If you prefer to avoid this, a privacy-respecting browser extension can block it; the site remains legible in the system-font fallback.

We keep this list current. If a category of processing changes, we update this policy.

Retention.

• Subscriber email — held until you unsubscribe, then deleted within 14 days. Unsubscribes are honoured on the next send cycle and confirmed by email.
• Server logs — 30 days, then deleted.
• Editorial correspondence — retained indefinitely as part of the publication's record, but never combined with subscriber data.

Your rights.

Wherever you live, you can ask us to:

• Confirm whether we hold any data about you, and if so, send you a copy.
• Correct or update anything that's wrong.
• Delete your subscriber record and any correspondence on request.
• Stop processing while a dispute is being resolved.

If you are in the EU/EEA, the UK, or California, you have the same rights under GDPR, UK GDPR, and CCPA respectively. We treat every request the same way regardless of jurisdiction.

Requests are processed within 30 days. There is no charge.

This policy is versioned. Material changes are announced in the next newsletter and noted at the top of this page. Cosmetic edits are made silently.
